Why I Chose to Become a GP
Dr Ivan Hoh

People often ask why I chose to become a General Practitioner. For me, the answer lies in a personal experience that highlighted the true value of good primary care — and the difference it can make in a person’s life.
A Story That Shaped My Perspective
Not long ago, my elderly mother was hospitalised with sudden confusion. She was unable to eat, drink, or recognise anyone. At the hospital, she was assessed for possible stroke or dementia. A full range of investigations was performed — brain scans, EEG, echocardiogram, ECG — and she was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. She was treated and admitted under a neurologist, but three days later, her confusion remained unchanged.
From Australia, I called the hospital several times a day, seeking updates and clarity. When I eventually spoke with the treating specialist, he seemed unconcerned. After pressing for answers, I discovered that one of the most common and treatable causes of confusion in older adults — a urinary tract infection — had been overlooked.
That experience was confronting and deeply humbling. It reminded me that medicine is not only about investigations and treatment plans; it is about careful listening, holistic thinking, and understanding the person behind the illness.
The Role of Primary Care
If stronger primary care had been in place — with continuity, attention to detail, and a clinician who truly knew the patient — my mother’s condition might have been recognised and managed much earlier. It reinforced my belief that effective General Practice is the cornerstone of a safe and compassionate healthcare system.
The Essence of General Practice
As a GP, I have the privilege of caring for people across all ages and stages of life. Every consultation offers the opportunity to connect, to understand, and to make a meaningful difference. It is the combination of science, problem-solving, and human connection that continues to inspire me each day.
